JOB TITLE: Design, Technical, Undergraduate
POSTING END DATE:  11/12/20

Programme Duration – 12 Months

Location – West Midlands

Salary – Circa £17,000

Our undergraduate programmes are the start of a fantastic career with Jaguar Land Rover. The reality of the projects we’ll immerse you in will surprise you. They offer real-world experience that will prepare you for a rapidly changing world and equip you for the future.

Our programmes are aimed at people who have a passion for learning and a passion for pioneering. Ambitious, innovative and determined people, who respect our heritage and think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow. With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications to target, our undergraduates work on projects that are fundamental to our global success.

Show us your passion and performance, and we may give you the opportunity to progress onto our graduate programme.

Design Technical (12 Months)

The beautiful shapes, sweeping curves and luxurious styles of our vehicles would be nothing without the accuracy in the technical set-up and attention to craftsmanship. As part of the Design Technical group, you’ll help to produce the flourishing finishes that grab attention wherever they’re seen, while working as part of one of our key teams: Surfacing and Studio Engineering.

With ongoing support and opportunities to gain further skills, everything you do will help us imagine the next generation of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and keep us at the forefront of automotive design. Opportunities exist within;

Surfacing

As part of our Surfacing team you’ll create and deliver feasible A-class surface geometry that achieves the design intent for interiors or exteriors in all Jaguar Land Rover and Special Vehicle products.  A-Surfaces are every part of the vehicle that you can see and touch that the Design team holds aesthetic control over.  Input is taken from digitised clay scans, package data, CAD concepts, sections, hard points and tooling requirements.  Working to high levels of geometric accuracy, you will create and release detailed A-class geometry for all A-Surface components in support of engineering and manufacturing requirements for final production release. It will be down to you to deliver best in class crafted optical solutions for design detail and engineered interfaces into new vehicle programmes. You’ll also be involved in complex negotiations with engineering, design, crafted quality and programme teams in the generation of concept schemes and detailed component surface releases using state of the art CAD systems.

Studio Engineering

A team of highly skilled whole vehicle engineers managing the critical interactions between Design, Engineering and Vehicle Attribute teams, with the aim to deliver a feasible Design intent. You will support the Design team in delivering creative technical solutions to achieve the design intent, while working alongside the Designers throughout the full development phase. With your strong technical background and creative mindset, you’ll generate concept schemes using state of the art CAD systems.

What’s required

Excellence runs throughout our entire business and we expect you to be the same. You’ll need a strong technical background, creative mind-set, good spatial awareness and have the confidence to get involved in complex negotiations with engineering and design.

For Surfacing and Studio Engineering you’ll need to be on track for a Design or Engineering degree at 2:2 level or higher.

Please be aware that our undergraduate placement opportunities are only open to penultimate year students (i.e. students who will be returning to their final year of study following their placement with us).

All applicants must upload a Design Portfolio to their application to be considered. This file must be no larger than 5MB and must detail on the front cover that you are applying for Design Technical and either Surfacing or Studio Engineering.

If applying for Surfacing, we would like to see evidence of attention to detail in balancing creative design with an understanding of manufacturing requirements/processes in the portfolio you submit. Evidence of creative CAD work is advantageous, particularly surface modelling although not essential as you will be trained.

If applying for Studio Engineering, we would like to see evidence of a design process from conception through to the technical layout stages. Evidence of benchmarking, current technology trends and final user requirements is a must. CAD work is an advantage but a well thought out hand drawn technical layout can also convey the same level of data. We want to see you have an appreciation for 3D form and how engineering / design influence each other.

All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date commencing June 21st 2021 and will run for a duration of 12 months.

Rewards and Benefits

Your innovation and creativity will be challenged every day, as you develop a rigorous and commercially focused approach in your work. And, with on-going support from industry leading experts and continual learning opportunities, you’ll quickly realise that our programmes have been designed to be as inspiring as the pioneering vehicles you’ll help produce.

Whichever part of the business you join your hard work and contribution deserves recognition. You’ll receive a competitive salary of around £326 per week, or £17,000 per annum.

For those on placements of longer than 3 months there is a generous holiday allowance. There are a range of other benefits and regular social events so plenty of chances to make friends and have fun too.
