Creating the cars of tomorrow is a challenge around 40,000 passionate Jaguar Land Rover colleagues take on every day. The way cars are created and driven is changing. And we are leading that change. Our vision is for a cleaner, smarter, more connected world where autonomous, connected, electrified and shared vehicles will replace the environmentally impactful world of the internal combustion engine. Throughout our history we have always taken on the challenges of creating the most prestigious, sustainable and desirable cars.

The Powertrain Engineering Function in Jaguar Land Rover

Powertrain Engineering is responsible for designing and developing world class engines, transmissions, electrical motors, drivelines, powertrain systems and controllers which deliver the driving experience our customers love. Powertrain utilises some of the most advanced techniques, facilities and knowledge to stay ahead of the competition. We understand and predict customer demand, and respond quickly to changing technological, environmental and legislative factors that drive the industry. We provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles using state of the art facilities. We shape our industry by finding the ideal balance between performance, sustainability, and refinement.

The Powertrain Engineering Higher (Technician) Apprenticeship now has two pathways:

Propulsion Technician
Computer Aided Design (CAD) Technician

These two pathways will see you become a world class Technician providing:

Technical leadership
Analytical skills

To do this you will undertake a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship approved by the Government. This exciting 4 year programme will develop your practical skills and cultivate the knowledge required for your particular role. This is all achieved whilst developing your professional behaviours such as team working and problem solving, as we are not just interested in what you accomplish, but the manner in which you do it.

As well as developing commercial and professional experience, you’ll also gain academic and vocational qualifications during your Apprenticeship including a BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (HNC) with an optional Higher National Diploma (HND) top up depending on performance and business demand plus a Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Manufacture or equivalent.

The HNC/D and a programme of foundation practical skills will be delivered at our lead Training Providers facilities. This will be via a combination of block and day release. It will provide the underpinning engineering knowledge for those on the apprenticeship to become world class Technicians in their specialist area.

This underpinning engineering knowledge will be supported through specialist in-plant training and placements when you are in company. This is where you will work towards your Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Manufacture and prepare you for your apprenticeship end point assessment.

If you are successful at being invited to an assessment centre we will ask you to indicate your preference for which pathway you would prefer to pursue.

The Propulsion Technician Pathway

The Technician will assume a proactive role in test delivery, taking responsibility, for example, test script creating, editing, first line data analysis, and quality validation providing an essential link between the test function and the propulsion engineer.

Training will be delivered in the second year in the test environment. This will see you learning how to operate state of the art test equipment. This experience will be built on as you move into your end role team in your third year and focus on your specific role. Typical job roles include, Emission Test (RDE) Technician, Electric Drive Units / Engine Build Technician, Engine Test Technician, Battery Test Technician.

The CAD Technician Pathway

The CAD Technician role plays a proactive part in the development of CAD models embedded with parameters and specifications. This is done to create robust designs at whole systems levels, taking responsibility for creating and evolving designs for the CAD and CAE Data and Systems Application Engineer to allow efficient component and concept delivery of parametric toolsets.

Training will be delivered in the second year and will see you developing your CAD skills through the training based in the Powertrain AVA Team. In the second year having become a CAD Creator you will be working on and delivering CAD projects. This will see you gradually working across the whole of Powertrain developing and delivering CAD toolsets to a world class standard. Typical job role, Powertrain CAD Technician.
