WHAT TO EXPECT 

 

We are looking for a Senior Cell Engineer to support the development, testing and delivery of the next generation batteries for traction battery systems.

 

You will be using state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll provide the power behind our vehicles working in our Powertrain Engineering team. You will possess the ideal balance between performance and sustainability, while responding to the environmental issues that shape our industry.

 

The role is part of Advanced Battery Engineering function and contributes to the development of new technologies and features to product delivery. This is an opportunity to join a team that are working at the fore-front of battery pack development in a team that are making significant steps in modelling, testing and overall concept design.

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Deliver the next generation HV batteries by working with the leading suppliers
  • Derivation of key parameters, algorithm and robust methodology for accurate cell SoC and SoH estimation; working closely with the BMS team
  • Validation of SoH algorithm within HIL rigs that have live cells/modules
  • Deliver knowledge capturing milestone projects including publishing of standards and test procedures
  • Deliver TCDS (Technology Creation & Development System) projects to support programme delivery
  • Leverage the HVM Catapult collaboration with academia and Subject Matter Experts

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

 

  • Lead Energy Storage projects for future vehicle programmes.
  • Lead test planning and facilities development activities both internal and external
  • Lead activities on derivation of algorithms for accurate cell SoC and SoH estimation at cell and module level
  • Lead activities with regards to validation of the above mentioned SoC and SoH algorithms
  • Provide technical support on projects in mainstream engineering
  • Support troubleshooting of battery issues in HEV and BEV programmes including 8Ds and Failure Mode analysis
  • Support JLR sponsored PhDs.
  • Support research projects investigating aspects battery cell performance related to cell parameterisation for accurate and effective Battery Management System, to deliver best pack performance over the life of the vehicle.
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested
  • File patent applications in order to protect new and innovative ideas

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential:

 

  • Electrochemist background at degree level, PhD preferable
  • Fundamental understanding of battery cell working principles
  • Experience of cell/module/pack testing
  • Hands-on experience of battery cell testing and data analysis
  • Experience in cell/battery pack design

 

Desirable:

 

  • Experience of using simulation and modelling programmes
  • Matlab / Simulink modelling experience
  • Experience of planning, co-ordination, delivery and reporting of requirements such as Product Creation Delivery System (PCDS)
  • A working knowledge of electrical systems and development processes, such as those used at Jaguar Land Rover
  • Previous experience of working with Universities and Research partners
