WHAT TO EXPECT

 

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are a critical part of JLR’s future strategy.  Traction batteries with high energy density presents a demanding set of multi physics engineering challenges. The purpose of this role is to support the design and development of safe next generation traction battery systems.

  

Working in a state-of-the-art facility, you’ll provide the analytical power behind our vehicles working in our Powertrain Engineering team. You'll find the optimal balance of performance, sustainability and integrity whilst responding to the environmental issues that shape our industry.

The Powertrain Engineering function drives development of new technologies and features through to delivery of new electric vehicle programmes.

 

The role is based in the Battery Product Development and Technology Chapters at Gaydon as part of the overall Powertrain electrified engineering group. Reporting to the HV Battery Technical Specialist the Engineer would be responsible for:

 

• Analyse battery system architecture and design to identify potential safety hazards and develop appropriate solutions

• Develop test plans and perform validation tests to ensure safety systems meet applicable standards and requirements.

• Analyse and interpret data from tests and simulations to identify potential safety issues and develop corrective actions

• Design and develop functional safety systems for electric vehicle batteries and related safety systems per applicable standards and regulations

• Develop safety systems documentation and reports, including hazard and risk assessments

• Design, conduct and analyse experiments to gain knowledge and insight into safety systems and behaviour

• Monitor safety system performance in field tests and make recommendations for improvements

• Remain up to date with battery safety regulatory requirements and the automotive industry standards

• Work with other teams and stakeholders to ensure the safe design of batteries

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Knowledge Skills & Experience

 

Essential:  

• Degree in relevant engineering discipline with a minimum 2-year relevant experience

• Knowledge of typical BEV battery system technologies

• Knowledge of lithium-ion cell designs and chemistries

• Understanding of typical battery characteristics and failures - electrical, thermal, mechanical and failure modes (venting and thermal runaway)  

• Familiarity with the different battery safety legislations/standards

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Resolution Techniques e.g., 8D and FMEA

• Strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team

• Excellent communication and presentation skills.

• The ability to make effective decisions in the best interest of the business and customer

• Flexible working and the ability to move between different sites.

 

Desired

• A masters or a doctorate degree in engineering or science

• Functional safety qualification

• Experience of JIRA, AIMs, Reliasoft, FFA

• Ability to use CAE tools such as MATLAB and CATIA

• Understanding of typical battery characteristics - cell types, electrical configuration, cell mounting limitations, cooling and heating requirements, venting

• Understanding of regulatory needs applicable to BEVs

• The ability to understand commodity timing plans (including design validation plans, programme plans and supplier timing plans)

• A working knowledge of the design and release process.
