JOB TITLE: Lead Engineer Electrical Hardware
SALARY: £41,000 - £53,300

This role supports the design and verification of battery management systems deployed in LV and HV batteries. The role looks at all aspects of HW electronics design and release, from design documentation, GRADE and EMC sign off, to implementation of DV & PV methods.


The PT-5 Department is responsible for the delivery of Electric and Hybrid Battery Technology in support of the product cycle plan. The department portfolio includes solutions incorporating system engineering, battery, power supply, EDS and control system technologies.


The successful candidate must be able to work in a multidisciplinary team working with principal engineers as well as embedded software, functional safety engineers and other specialists.



  • Electronics design and integration at the system and sub-system level

  • Production of Electrical/Electronic specifications and designs which fulfil contractual requirements and contribute to cost-effective solutions

  • Requirements management and production of technical specifications

  • Design and maintain product architecture of BMS HW covering all aspects of the components function including hardware, firmware, electronics, electrics and mechanical specifications

  • Lead GRADE compliance reviews and sign off

  • Write and execute PV and DV test plans and provide documentation for manufacturing operations team

  • Management of all technical issues with customers and suppliers to ensure compliance with technical requirements and quality standards

  • System design and integration into vehicle platforms

  • Acceptance and verification testing of systems

  • Consideration of safety, EMC, risk, reliability and maintainability associated with the technical solution, in conjunction with subject matter experts

  • Produce drawings, schemes, design specifications, technical plans, reports and any other technical outputs, which simultaneously fulfil contractual requirements and contribute to cost-effective design

  • Assisting in the validation of any systems / equipment, which may include the generation of test schedules, test and integration plans and the writing/investigation of technical reports

  • Maintain an up to date understanding of technical / engineering developments and apply this knowledge appropriately to the projects in hand

  • Schedule own work to meet target timescales and budget demands

  • Ensure engineering designs address the following:

  • Safety

  • Design for manufacture

  • Design to target cost.



  • Clear understanding of Li-ION / NMC batteries and related BMS technologies

  • Strong understanding of BMS functions, such as battery protection logics, SOC / SOH estimation, algorithms, derating strategies etc.

  • Strong understanding of EMC theory and design principles and experience of practical implementation (academic or industry), with EMC test experience.

  • Knowledge of HV Vehicle systems and components with a basic knowledge of vehicle architecture and automotive design.

  • Ability to conceptualise electrical and electronic schematic according to the specification of the project.

  • Experience in detailed electrical drawings and PCB layouts.

  • Experience in HW debugging and fast prototyping, as well as instrumentation.

  • Experience in BOM, CAD drawings (AutoCad), schematics, datasheets etc.

  • Ability to take designs from prototype through to production.

  • Experience in maintaining existing PCB designs and electrical design, selecting appropriate components, and laying out in a robust design.

  • Should have knowledge of electronic components Mosfets, Op AMPs, ADC, microcontrollers etc. Should be able to test / debug circuits / logics independently.

  • Should be able to read and understand hardware schematics independently

  • Proficient at using instrumentation tools like CROs, data loggers, using scripts, CANAlyzers etc.

  • Strong understanding of design, development and qualification processes.

  • Planning and project management skills

  • Ability to identify and communicate clear project goals and project plans
