Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship
Our Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Programme Degree Apprenticeship is aimed at those with a passion for learning and innovation.
We’re reimagining the future of automotive, refining the quality of our combustion engines and expanding into electrification. As an Applied Professional Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will become a multi-disciplinary engineer, developing digital technology solutions for modern luxury vehicles that are renowned for their desirability and performance.
The Level 6 Applied Professional Engineering Degree apprenticeship programme takes four years to complete and adheres to Skills England Product Development and Design (Degree) apprenticeship standard. As an apprentice, you will develop the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) outlined in the apprenticeship standard. These will be assessed during your End Point Assessment (EPA), where you will demonstrate the competencies and skills you’ve gained throughout the programme.
Product Design and Development pathway
As an apprentice in the Product Design and Development pathway, you will be responsible for the delivery of everything the customer sees and touches in a vehicle. Our teams create and develop engineering solutions from the virtual to the physical environment, to deliver world class products, processes and facilities. Our goal is to create high-quality, desirable and technologically advanced products that will shape the future of mobility. You will be working on features and products available to customers in the next 10 years right through to current vehicles.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and career-building skills while working at the forefront of the automotive industry. This exciting programme is designed to help you build practical skills, deepen your foundational knowledge, and develop essential business behaviours such as teamwork and
problem-solving. And you’ll be supported by a JLR early careers cohort leader, the university team, and your line manager every step of the way.

Year 1 – 2
This programme is delivered through a combination of online study, face-to-face lectures, independent learning each week. This gives you the chance to apply your learning from University of Warwick to projects in a real-world environment. You’ll study a range of modules designed to build your essential knowledge, skills and behaviours, with regular process reviews along to way to ensure you’re getting the support you need from your tutors and line manager.
Years 3-4
In years 3 and 4 you will complete modules related to your chosen specialism –Product Design and Development. In your final year, you’ll complete a work-based project as part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). This is an opportunity for you to use the skills and experience you gained throughout your time on the programme and apply them directly to your role. And when you’ve successfully completed your EPA, you’ll achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship and taking on new responsibilities and making a meaningful impact within the business.
Throughout your apprenticeship you could be based within any of the following Product Engineering functional areas: Vehicle Platform (VP) or Engineering Operations (EO). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.
VEHICLE PLATFORM TEAM- Gaydon, Whitley, National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC), Solihull
The Vehicle Platform team is where engineering meets innovation - delivering world class automotive experiences. We engineer and deliver the core systems that define the customer experience - everything from Body Interiors, Body Exteriors, Body in White, Chassis, EDU, Powertrains and Accessories. We are a large, highly skilled team with a focus on integrating cutting-edge technology and engineering excellence to create vehicles that set new standards in performance, comfort and safety.
You will be part of a team that is responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions; learning tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capability, increase your profile, and accelerate your development as an engineer. This will involve working on new products and enhancing current products from the basic science all the way through to the customers hands. You may work on the Body Interiors, Body Exteriors, battery technology, electric drive units or charging and power electronics that underpin the next generation of electrified powertrains. Typical activities could include completing competitor benchmarking and strategy work for future programmes, using computer aided design (CAD) models to analyse and optimise physical components or systems delivering new components, developing new software algorithms and control strategies to monitor and control engineering systems, completing product testing and validation and helping to improve current product quality through continuous improvement.
Engineering Operations (EO) - Gaydon or Whitley
Engineering Operations (EO) are at the heart of JLR Engineering. Involved at every stage of the engineering process, they underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products. A diverse team, Engineering Operations harness a variety of skill sets, from project management, information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes. By joining Engineering Operations, you will make a difference to what we do.
As an apprentice within Engineering Operations, you could join us in one of the following roles:
Prototype Vehicle Engineering (PVE) Project Engineer – This role will support the continued growth of our niche prototype project engineering team within PVE. You will deliver projects while deepening your knowledge to strengthen the engineering team of the future. You will learn project management skills while carrying out clash analysis, ergonomic assessments. You will define design briefs, communicate manufacturing details, develop processes while defining and presenting solutions to complex prototype challenges. You will deliver prototype attributes, roll over protection packaging and camouflage design. All of this will be supported by your increasing technical and practical knowledge of Body-in-White components and assemblies. (Whitley).
Facilities Engineering Engineer - This role will support the design and delivery of prototype tools and fixtures needed for early JLR prototype build. It is a role that is key to us meeting future project and business needs going forward. You will learn how to design fixtures and tools using CAD (IPLM), understand how prototype vehicles are built, and gain practical problem-solving skills. You will grow in confidence as you work with a variety of teams, understanding processes, and supporting real projects, giving you a strong foundation for a future engineering career. (Whitley).
Test Engineer - In these roles you will implement industry leading skills and practices within the rig / vehicle test environment. It will give you skills that are highly sought after. You will gain a depth of knowledge and proficiency in the whole testing system V and closed loop control. You will apply mechanical, electrical and software theory in your role while developing project planning skills. This will be supported by working in an ‘agile’ engineering environment deploying software programming capability. You will gain a deep understanding of health and safety within the team and workshops that you will be based in. (Gaydon and Whitley)
WHAT’S REQUIRED?
You’ll need to have achieved GCSE Maths and English Language at level 5 or higher above. You’ll also need three additional GCSEs at level 5 (C) or higher, to include one STEM subject.
In addition, you will need to have achieved or be on track to achieve A-level Maths at grade B or higher and an additional A-level in Physics, Chemistry, Design & Technology or Engineering at grade C or higher.
