Apply your learning, satisfy your curiosity and prepare for a long, successful career alongside industry experts. Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.
Your future starts here.
PRODUCT ENGINEERING: SOFTWARE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
At JLR, our vehicles feature some of the most advanced technology in the industry. Before drivers get in our cars, software identifies their key fob and unlocks the vehicle. During the journey, software supports their driving via stability and assistance systems and provides a welcoming and refined user experience through infotainment. Software is also crucial to our new electric propulsion systems. This means our software engineers get to work on some of the most innovative projects in the business, delivering the modern luxury vehicles of the future.
As an undergraduate, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, supporting our software teams to deliver best quality, reliable features that delight our customers. Along the way, you’ll gain valuable insight into the design, implementation and advanced validation techniques of the tools and processes we work with every day.
During your placement year, you could work in one of the following teams: Digital Product Platform (DPP), Vehicle Engineering (VE), Engineering Research (ER), Vehicle Platform (VP), Energy Platform (EP) or Engineering Operations (EO).
Below you can find out more about the teams. The team you’re placed in will depend on your personal preferences and business needs.
DIGITAL PLATFORM TEAM – Gaydon
Our Digital Platform team design, develop and shape the future of our electronics and complex systems. To do this, they harness a wealth of techniques including model-based software development and directly writing code.
As an undergraduate in this team, you’ll be key to ensuring our future vehicles have high-quality, reliable features that delight our drivers. This could be through robust design and implementation, advanced validation techniques or providing tools and processes to enable the engineering teams to work better. Your primary focus will be on low-level software development, ensuring our in-vehicle computer systems provide the very best performance, using boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast-boot processes.
VEHICLE PLATFORM TEAM - (Gaydon, Whitley or NAIC)
The Vehicle Platform team is where engineering meets innovation - delivering world class automotive experiences. We engineer and deliver the core systems that define the customer experience - everything from Body Interiors, Body Exteriors, Body in White, Chassis, EDU, Powertrains & Accessories. We are a large, highly skilled team with a focus on integrating cutting-edge technology and engineering excellence to create vehicles that set new standards in performance, comfort and safety.
We’re responsible for designing and developing software that runs both inside and outside the vehicle, supporting all the innovative and high-tech features a customer expects from a JLR product. We do this with model-based software development and directly writing code. This is complemented by developers working in Embedded-C and engineers who use a variety of languages, including Python, to build and maintain our DevOps software pipelines. Our role goes beyond writing code—we design how software systems work together and ensure quality through software testing, calibration, and validation. This spans from virtual rigs to in-vehicle and real-world test environments.
As a Software undergraduate, if you join this team, you’ll be responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions, securing JLRs future as a leading provider of premium and sustainable electrified vehicles. You’ll learn how to use tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise impressive engineering solutions – working on new products and enhancing our current ones. This role will raise your profile across the business as you collaborate with different stakeholders, accelerating your development as an engineer and preparing you for the engineering landscape of tomorrow.
ENERGY PLATFORM TEAM - (Gaydon, Whitley, NAIC)
Electrification is at the heart of our Business Transformation. It’s truly exciting for us. World class refinement, supreme driving dynamics, uncompromised designs and next-generation features are all expressions of the electric experience we are curating for our clients. In the Energy Platform Team, as a Software Undergraduate, you will be working in the Future Energy Lab in Whitley, developing and testing the Electric Drive Units (EDUs) built in-house, while bringing together electrified power, performance and connectivity to create the future of exceptional yet sustainable driving experiences.
Our iconic brands are the foundation of exemplary British engineering, but now we’re using cutting-edge research and technology to develop the next generation energy storage devices, batteries, transmissions and drivelines. We’re a global team, with testing facilities and offices all around the world. With this kind of global presence and our £15bn investment in the electrification of our luxury brands, Energy Platform is where modern luxury comes to life. We work with Tier 1 suppliers on vehicle software; we also write our own software in-house. Model Based Development with MATLAB/Simulink is the core of our software activity. This is complemented by developers working in Embedded-C and engineers who use a variety of languages, including Python, to build and maintain our DevOps software pipelines.
As a Software undergraduate in the Energy Platform, you won’t just be generating code, you can also get involved in defining, testing, calibrating and validating software. As part of the Energy Platform, you’ll be key to securing JLRs future as a leading provider of premium and sustainable electrified vehicles, supporting JLRs commitment to Destination Zero by 2039.
ENGINEERING OPERATIONS (EO) TEAM (Gaydon and Whitley)
Engineering Operations (EO) underpins technical innovation and product delivery through modern tools, processes, and specialist technical services. Our diverse team works across project management, data analytics, prototype build and testing, ensuring world-class products. We’re involved at every stage of the engineering process, helping JLR transform how we engineer and deliver vehicles.
As an undergraduate, you could join one of two specialist teams:
Product Information – (Gaydon)
Responsible for delivering accurate product specifications and Bills of Materials using modern data engineering tools. You’ll work with product data frameworks, pipelines and dashboards, learning how high‑quality data supports engineering, manufacturing and faster decision‑making across the business.
Across this role, you’ll gain hands‑on experience in data engineering, analytics and process improvement, while developing technical skills in tools such as Python, VBA, GCP and Tableau. You may get involved in improving data quality and standards, building dashboards, supporting agile delivery and transforming how product information is used. These activities will develop your problem‑solving, analytical thinking and understanding of how reliable data drives product development and business performance.
Powertrain Test Operations – Test & Methodology Engineer (Whitley)
Powertrain Test Operations plays a key role in JLR’s transformation of vehicle testing, supporting the shift toward software‑defined, electrified vehicles. The team provides high‑quality test data for vehicle systems and subsystems, developing flexible test capabilities that integrate with enterprise systems and adapt quickly to programme needs. By improving how test data is collected, processed and analysed, the team helps accelerate product development and improve test efficiency.
You’ll work as a Test and Methodology Engineer where you’ll develop software and data engineering skills within a fast‑paced testing environment. You’ll learn about BEV technology, test methodologies, physical data collection and data analysis, contributing to the creation of data pipelines that automate processes and generate valuable insights. You may get involved in activities such as coding, API integration, cloud-based application development and large‑scale data analysis. These experiences will build your technical capability, project ownership and understanding of how data‑driven testing supports product quality and delivery.
In addition, in both teams you’ll have the opportunity to complete three six-week rotations in other Engineering Operations teams, broadening your knowledge of software tools and data-driven engineering. Throughout your 12-month programme, you’ll collaborate on business-critical projects, work with state-of-the-art technology, and be supported by a mentor—making a real impact on JLR’s product development and propulsion innovations.
