JOB TITLE Junior Software Engineer

SALARY: £28,300 - £36,800

POSTING END DATE: 16/10/2020

LOCATION: Manchester

Dreaming for tomorrow is about more than ideas and ambitions. We’re already building the next generation of vehicles, using repurposed and brand-new technology and techniques. We’re doing more than dream, we’re creating the future of mobility and automotive for years to come.

We are Jaguar Land Rover, and we’re in Manchester. We believe that all of our customers deserve a great connected digital experience and you have a chance to be a part of realising that vision. The teams here at the Digital Delivery Centre (DDC) are on a journey to transform the digital future of Jaguar Land Rover; designing and building innovative systems and products for one of the world’s leading luxury automotive brands in new and exciting ways.

Whether it’s a platform to remotely update cars via Software Over the Air (SOTA) as seen in the brand new Defender, or systems to make the design and engineering of our vehicles more efficient, we work with all parts of the business on some interesting and complex challenges. Don’t just build another website - see the impact of your work as it makes a real difference to our luxury vehicles across the globe and to the customers who love them.

We’re looking for Junior Software Engineers with a passion for innovative problem solving, quality-first coding and continual improvement who want to become true technical leaders. You’ll be working closely with other multi-disciplined engineers with opportunities to learn and enhance your career, as well as inspiring and influencing the wider organisation as we transform how Jaguar Land Rover builds and operates digital vehicles.

As a Junior member of the team, you’ll constantly be learning from more experienced engineers about technical and non-technical best practices, but you’ll also be a key member of the team and have opportunities to change those practices, propose new approaches and ways of working. We won’t put you on a ‘training programme’ for the first six months, you’ll be working on real projects making a real difference from day one.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Own and support full-lifecycle software from development to testing to production and beyond working closely with other engineers and disciplines within the DDC
  • Design and build software in line with our modern software engineering and DevOps practices including TDD, pair programming and CI/CD
  • Ensure software meets DDC levels of quality, automating at every opportunity
  • Participate in workshops to help identify, design and refine user requirements
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering practices and standards to enhance the DDC and improve Jaguar Land Rover
  • Work with technical and non-technical business stakeholders to understand and implement software features
  • Look for opportunities to improve yourself and the wider team through continual learning and self-development, communities of practice and brown bag sessions

We’re looking for both backend and frontend engineers, and if you’re comfortable working across the full stack then even better. So we’re certainly keen to talk to people with:

  • Some experience with Java (and Spring Boot), Golang or other server-side languages and frameworks
  • OR some experience with client-side JavaScript and common libraries such as React

Beyond that, the following would be great as well. We don’t expect people to know everything, so even if you’re only familiar with a couple of these then we’d love to hear from you:

  • Real world experience of practices such as Test Driven Development (TDD) and Pair Programming
  • Knowledge and experience of event-driven microservice architectures, RESTful APIs and message queues
  • Comfortable with source code management and version control tools (Git/GitLab/GitHub)
  • Built bespoke enterprise grade cloud-native applications
  • Worked with relational database technologies such as MySQL or similar
  • Quality focussed with experience writing automated unit, integration and acceptance tests
  • Built and managed automated CI/CD pipelines for building, testing and deploying your code

Bring all this to the home of premium innovation, and you’ll find the opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, membership of a competitive pension plan and performance related bonus scheme. All this and more makes Jaguar Land Rover the perfect place to continue your journey.
