As an Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and deploying systems for accelerating test bed development and validation of complex power train systems through the integration of HiL, SiL and test bed automation systems. The role will support the development and daily operation of power train component test bed automation systems in the Jaguar Land Rover test facilities in Whitley B12 and the new engineering centre (NPDC) covering engine (ICE), full 4x4 powertrain, EDU, Inverter rigs and Chassis Dyno cells. There is particular focus on HiL integration which includes the integration of other associated systems – automation systems, application systems, combustion measurement, automated calibration and network simulation tools for example.


You will work with the test automation team to deliver robust software solutions to enable vehicle level testing at a component and subsystem level, and you will support the effective operation of these systems to deliver timely quality data with the functionality required by the engineering teams. The role will work on projects to deliver new solutions supporting test and development and trouble shooting daily issues within Programme Timing Targets. The role will be support system robustness, uptime and disaster recovery actions in support of the Annual run hours objectives.

The role will be based in Coventry and will be part of the Advanced Systems team.


Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities 


As an Automation Engineer, our key Accountabilities and responsibilities will include development of new features to meet engineering requirements, supporting the role of Lead Engineers, Advanced Systems and support activities to ensure timely delivery of appropriate test systems configurations. You will support activities to ensure effective test bed uptime to support Annual run time objectives, meet specific targets for quality, cost and time in the Whitley test fields and work with Core Power Train teams to ensure test systems meet functional requirements.




The ideal candidate will have a passion for the automotive industry, good delivery skills and the ability to multitask. You will be comfortable in a challenging and busy environment and able to deliver to deadlines, resilient and enthusiastic, an individual able to deliver results under pressure, whilst responding constructively to challenging new ideas and inputs, and be a dynamic and determined individual, highly driven, committed and results-orientated with significant pace, energy and confidence.



Knowledge, Skills and Experience



  • Matlab/Simulink experience

  • dSPACE or other HiL simulation tools

  • Scripting/programming skills in a control environment

  • Knowledge of instrumentation and systems

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills



  • Knowledge of AVL Puma/FEV Morphee or other Automotive automation system

  • Knowledge of associated test bed instrumentation and systems (combustion systems, Vector, Canalyser, INCA, AVL Cameo)

  • Knowledge of test facility Mechanical & Electrical hardware

  • Good negotiation skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Degree or relevant equivalent experience

  • Working knowledge of change control and change management processes

  • Working in Agile teams
