There now exists an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Senior Research Engineer, specifically in the area of eXtended Reality, Metaverse and Web 3.0, to develop, guide and deliver projects to support the “Digitalisation and Connectivity” theme. This will involve working on projects where eXtended Reality technologies could deliver amazing new capabilities for our customers/vehicles as well as exploring completely new opportunities that the Web 3.0 and Metaverse could enable.

The successful senior engineer will need to bring strong technical abilities to the team and work as part of an agile squad focussed on releasing the most value to the business/customer in an iterative manner. The outputs of the projects could range from desktop analysis, bench top demonstrations, full proof of concepts within a vehicle as appropriate and showcasing these to the stakeholders at all levels the company as required. An extremely high level of engineering capability will be required to ensure the concepts are well defined and realisable when taken forward to production.

This role will involve collaborative research both internally within the team, with our stakeholders across the business as well as with key leading UK universities and external partners.




  • Delivery of relevant research into eXtended Reality, Web3.0 and Metaverse related technologies with a robust research approach with adherence to research processes.
  • As part of a agile squad, develop implementation/activity plans to support the sprint/quarterly goals of the specific XR/Metaverse/Web3.0 project being tackled by the team.
  • Resolve of key technical and strategic challenges by applying technical know-how to solve the goals of the project.
  • Development of Proof-of-Concepts in house or with support from key suppliers/partners as appropriate
  • Ensuring robust, data led recording of findings, as well as adherence to relevant procedures
  • Development of project roadmaps for the business kept updated with latest insights, ideas, technologies and proactively ensuring prioritisation of Roadmap with stakeholders
  • Ensuring new and innovative ideas are captured as patents to maximise value to JLR.
  • Providing strong technical support / knowledge transfer on projects when handing over to mainstream engineering





  • Strong Technical knowledge of 1 or more of:
    • eXtended Reality - hardware and/or software
    • 3D Graphics/VR/Gaming Software Developmen(Unity, Unreal etc)/ Experience Design and creation
    • Web 3.0 technologies / Metaverse
    • Delivery of new customer features on in-vehicle architectures
    • eXtendered Reality User Experience research, design, definition, and validation
  • Ability to find resolutions to key technical issues within a team environment
  • Ability to form relevant and strong research questions and then breakdown into a set of logical tasks that will allow team to find and understand the answers as quickly as possible.
  • Ability to understand and filter relevant, applicable, future technologies and topics
  • Ability to write reports and communicate to technical and non-technical audience.
  • "Hacking" skills (finding software and hardware solutions for new problems)
  • Relevant degree (or equivalent experience) – E.g. Electronic, Electrical, Computing, Maths, Science or similar
  • Experience of mentoring junior members of a team


  • Previous experience in a Research role in engineering or automotive environment
  • Experience of Agile or equivalent research delivery process
  • Experience of Automotive telematics, connectivity (4G/5G) and on-board communication protocols (e.g. CAN, Ethernet etc)
  • Skilled in software development and good understanding of principals of software design
  • Embedded software and hardware design for automotive
  • A working knowledge of automotive electrical systems and development processes, such as those used at Jaguar Land Rover
  • Previous experience of working with Universities, Start-ups and Research partners
