WELCOME TO OUR NEW EMPLOYABILITY HUB

Everyone has a different vision for what they want to become at the beginning of their careers and there are many different paths that you can take. But what does it take to get there? Is it a career designed for growth? Or an environment that allows you the opportunity to create a better future? Is it both?

At JLR we’re invested in you. We want to help you to achieve the exceptional.

Our employability hub is a newly created page for 2023, focused on providing you with support, guidance and handy hints and tips. We’ve done this to help you find the career that’s right for you. The following information has been created by our Early Careers recruitment team, and has been put together by those who are passionate about your personal growth and unlocking your potential.

We care about creating equal opportunities and hope our new hub can provide you with the motivation and preparation you need to apply with confidence and succeed throughout the assessment process.

Our application process

At JLR we understand that you’ll apply to multiple organisations to secure your dream career, which can take considerable time. So, we’ve simplified our application process into three main stages, all of which take place online. If you are successful through these stages, you’ll receive an offer to join one of our programmes, with further exciting engagement to follow before you officially start.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Complete your online application form by simply telling us about you, your motivations and your experience. Just a watchout though, you can only apply to one programme, so take the time to review our range of opportunities and which pathways you have the required qualifications to apply for. Showcasing your motivation is key here.

You’ll be pleased to hear we don’t require a CV or cover letter to apply, but for some of our programmes you may be required to provide evidence, such as a full UK Driving Licence, so make sure to carefully read what’s required.

Please note our Creative (Design) roles differ and you will need to submit a portfolio of your work as part of any application made.

REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS

As part of your assessment, it’s important to let us know if you need any additional support. JLR are committed to providing equal opportunities to anyone who wants to work here. We want to make sure you receive a fair shot at securing a career with us, so please tell our team how they can best support your needs.

During the application stage of the recruitment process, you will be able to let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments. There will be a ‘free text’ box for you to confirm what adjustments you require/usually receive at school, college or university; an example of a reasonable adjustment would be extra time for the online assessments, information to be presented to you differently or for us to simply be aware of your needs. There will also be opportunity throughout the assessment process, to connect with our recruitment team – contact details are below.

Top tips

Who doesn’t love a top tip? We think there's no one better to hear from than our people on the programme.

Watch the video here for their useful hints and tips for success.

Before you apply

Before you apply

  • We understand that thinking about the beginning or next steps in your career is an important decision. Find an organisation with a purpose and set of values that align to your own. This is just as important as the role you are looking to applying to.
  • As you begin to start your job search explore the key attributes that matter to you and what will be important when you start a new role. This might be a great development training programme or the rewards and benefits package, but whatever it is, take the time to think it through.
  • Research - Find out all you can about the industry you are looking for a career in. Having an understanding of upcoming industry trends and what the future may look like can help you demonstrate to the organisation how you intend to play your part. It also helps in your decision-making process and identifying what your future career could entail within the industry.
  • Did we mention research? You’ll need to research the company too. Explore both their website and other sources such as news articles, social media and industry journals. Take the time to explore the organisations strategy and future ambitions. Most organisations will look for you to understand this and demonstrate your knowledge within an interview. This will help you to gain a well-rounded understanding of the organisation, the type of roles that exist. At JLR we’re reimaging the future, a strategy that will realise our vision to be proud creators of the most desirable brands. With ambitions such as becoming carbon net zero by 2039 and the renaissance of Jaguar as a pure-electric brand from 2025 it genuinely is an exciting time to join us.

Making your application

Making your application

  • As you’ll only be able to make one application per our recruitment cycle at JLR (September – March) take the time to discover which role and pathway is most suited to your skills, knowledge and importantly what you are most passionate about.
  • Ensure you add all your qualifications including any predicted qualifications. Remember to check you have the right qualification/s or are on track to complete by the time the programme commences.
  • Be honest – we will check the details of your application. It’s important to be transparent and build trust with the organisation you hope to join.
  • We want you to demonstrate your passion to work for us and the role you are applying to. Within the application you will have a free text question to show us your motivations. This is crucial, don’t just add one word or one sentence, really take the time to tell us why we would want to hire you.
  • Check over your application – ensure you’ve completed all the essential fields and that you’ve filled in your details correctly.

Completing your online assessments

Completing your online assessments

  • Our process includes a Situational Judgement Test, Aptitude Tests and a Personality Assessment. You can find out more about our tests above.
  • Find yourself a quiet space to undertake your assessment. It’s important you focus and an environment with minimal distractions so you can focus and give us your best answers possible.
  • Practice. Practice. Practice. Click here to enter the practice test area. Each assessment at each organisation will vary and we recognise this can be a nerve-wracking process. Take the time to explore a range of online practice tests to help you experience the process and what you might expect.
  • Ensure you read through the question/s and scenarios carefully during your assessment. Don’t rush yourself, it's easy to make mistakes.
  • Be confident in yourself. Try not to overthink and take some time to calm your nerves.
  • Answer honestly. Remember we want to understand more about you and the way you work.

Preparing for your Assessment Centre

Preparing for your Assessment Centre

  • Ahead of your assessment day familiarise yourself with the behaviours the company will be assessing you against. At JLR we assess you against our Creators’ Code.
  • Research the organisation. This is essential. Take the time to understand our Reimagine strategy and vision for the future, our products and services and what’s happening within the wider industry.
  • Take the time to review the role you applied for and consider what examples you want to share within your interview. You might want to consider workplace experiences or examples from school, college or university, including experiences such as volunteering, for example. You might even want to consider writing these down and bringing these to your interview. An interview isn’t a memory test, it’s a chance to showcase your potential.
  • When attending a virtual assessment be sure to test your technology to reduce any impact but don’t worry, we know technology isn't perfect. You might want to check your internet connection, audio and your microphone to ensure they are working. But remember if you do face any issues on the day remain calm. We understand. Just try turning it off and on again.
  • Let us know if you need any adjustments to support you to perform at your best. We want you to succeed and letting us know your need for adjustments won’t reflect negatively on you. We’re here to make things as smooth as possible.

On the day of your Assessment Centre

On the day of your Assessment Centre

  • We know that assessments can be nerve-racking. Keep calm and carry on. The assessors on the day want you to perform your best and are on hand to make sure all goes well.
  • Arrive early to your assessment – even if this is virtual, logging in a few minutes ahead can help to put you at ease and get you in a space ready to start.
  • Grab a glass of water before you start your assessment. If you feel nervous or unsure of any questions, having a glass of water can enable you to take a moment to compose yourself.
  • Ask the assessor to repeat the question if you’re unsure or to rephrase it for you.
  • Come with your passion. Organisations want to see that you are genuinely excited about them and the role that you’ve applied for. The interview is your chance to demonstrate why you are the right fit for the role and that you’ve done your research.
  • Prepare questions to ask the end of your interview. Remember it’s just as important that you know that the company is the right fit for you. At the start of this guide, we mentioned identifying your values or things that are important to you. If you’ve not been able to find out something about an organisation in advance or would like to delve a bit further the interview is a perfect chance to find out more.
  • When answering any questions during the assessment centre using the STARRY technique can be a perfect way to share your example. See next tab.

STARRY technique

STARRY technique

When answering any questions during the assessment centre, using the STARRY technique can be a perfect way to share your example. Starry stands for:

  • S - Situation. This is where you give us some context
  • T - the Task. What was the challenge or ask of you
  • A - the Actions you took
  • R - the Result
  • R - for Reflection and what you might do differently next time
  • Y - is about You and what you did as part of the example / scenario. Remember to use 'I' rather than 'we'.

Watch the short video below to hear about how you can use the STARRY methodology within your interview.

Receiving your offer

Receiving your offer

  • Congratulations! You should be incredibly proud. Securing an apprenticeship, undergraduate placement or graduate programme is a competitive process and you did it. We know that you might receive multiple offers, but we care about early careers and supporting you, so we hope that you choose us.
  • For those that don’t receive an offer don’t let this stop you. If you’re passionate keep trying. Ask for feedback from your interview to understand where you could improve, helping you to prepare for next time.

Next Steps

Next Steps

  • Keep an eye on your emails. We’ll want to keep in contact with you and keep you updated with information ahead of joining. Check your junk folders and add our email addresses to your safe senders list.

  • We’ll connect you with other early careers hires, engage with them and build your network. It’ll make life easier for you to have a support system of people in the same position.

Creators' Code - What we look for

Each organisation will have their own specific behaviours and values they look for in potential candidates. At JLR, this is our Creators' Code. This code of behaviours is integral to our ability to achieve our vision as an organisation. It provides a framework to how we act in the workplace and how we treat our fellow colleagues. Our Creators' Code inspires a mindset that will encourage collaboration, understanding, continued learning and a customer-focus to help us achieve high-performing outcomes for JLR.

Click on the behaviours below to read about them and what we are looking for.

Customer love

Customers are usually perceived as people who purchase a product or a service. However, they could also be people who take an interest in a project that you are delivering or who are affected by its results. Think about who might be our customers at JLR. How would you put our customers’ needs at heart of what you are doing? How would you ensure you met their expectations? Think about when you were a customer yourself. What made you remember your experience? What could have been improved?

Skill to develop

Demonstrate your motivation

Customer love – a passion for our business and what we do

Showing your motivation for a job might seem simple, right? But knowing how to do this in an interview or workplace scenario might not always come that easy. Motivation can be a deal-breaker for whether you’ll be successful. At JLR we want you to be passionate about our future, products and our customers and the part you can play in delivering the most desirable, sustainable and luxurious vehicles of the future. Not a car expert? Not a problem! We’re looking for you to be passionate about our brand and what we deliver, you’re not expected to know everything at this stage.

Hear from our team on how you can demonstrate your motivation.

UNITY

We work as ONE

Recognising each other's individuality is what truly drives a healthy environment in which diversity of perceptions is leveraged. Reflect on a time when you were part of a project, a team, or simply a group of people. What made you feel included and what have you done to make others feel like they belong? How was decision making approached within the group? Think about a time when a decision was made that you were not fully confident in – how did you approach the situation and what was the result? Do you wish you would have handled it differently? What were your learnings from it?

Skill to develop

Building Relationships within the workplace

Unity – networking and collaborating

We are focused on unity and working as one. Without this, we wouldn’t be able to build the cars of tomorrow, today. At the centre of our success is our people, the collaboration and relationships that make us who we are as a business. Taking the time to develop effective relationships can play a key part in your future.

INTEGRITY

We speak the TRUTH

Being open to different perspectives does not mean leaving your own behind. Being yourself while being respectful and kind allows everyone to express themselves without fear of judgement. Remember a time when you made a mistake while being part of a project team or group of people. How did you address it? How would you describe the team or group environment? Is there anything you feel you could have done differently?

Skill to develop

Building your personal brand

Integrity – how do you show up at work as your authentic self?

Coming to work as your authentic self is important to us as a business. At JLR we’re passionate about diversity and inclusion. We want to celebrate the unique qualities that are personal to you. Your personal brand reflects the combination of your skills, experiences and values that make you, you.

GROWTH

We progress TOGETHER

Growth is a mindset running on a constant desire to learn and improve, and feedback is crucial in monitoring its progress. However, as we all know, feedback must be constructive and positive to ensure that progress takes place. When was the last time you received or have given feedback to someone? Reflect on both positive and constructive feedback – what were the challenges? How did it make you feel and how did you approach the conversation? What was the environment/medium chosen for the conversation? What do you wish you could have done differently? What happened after the feedback was delivered?

IMPACT

We are PURPOSE orientated

Having an impact does not only mean delivering big, visible results. Impact can be found in taking responsibility for one's actions and for delivering on time, striving to do better, and always seeking to collaborate and share ideas. It’s about getting involved and driving the change, not just being a passenger (pun intended). When you play your part and inspire others to do the same, that impact multiplies, and the results speak for themselves. When was the last time you've made an impact? Think about what had made you realise that your actions have been impactful – was it a piece of feedback, feeling appreciated, or the result itself. Remember to think about what you specifically were responsible for in this scenario.

Acknowledge both the destination and the ride while reflecting on what went well and the result. Take time to reflect on your learnings – what could have been done better? What could you apply in the future?

Supporting you

Looking after you

Wherever you work at JLR you’ll find a huge range of group support and activities to get involved in. Helping everyone to perform at their best means supporting everyone to feel their best every day. Visit our wellbeing website which brings all of our wellbeing activity to one place, making it easier for you to find the support and information you need to help you look after your mind, body, and life.
